President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that the National Guard has been deployed to protect immigration and customs enforcement operations, citing the deteriorating situation in Oregon.
Last Saturday (September 27), President Trump announced that he would send troops to Portland, Oregon's largest city, to deal with those he designated as "domestic terrorists." He stated that the protests were interfering with the enforcement of immigration laws.
"The situation is continuing to devolve into lawless chaos as I judged when I activated and deployed the National Guard in Oregon on September 27," President Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He pointed out, "Our great federal law enforcement officers have been unable to enforce the law in Oregon. Antifa and radical left anarchists have been viciously attacking our federal law enforcement officers who are protecting federal property and enforcing federal immigration laws and the rule of law."
He added, "We will never allow mobs to occupy our streets, burn down our cities, and destroy our country. The National Guard has been deployed and has been dedicated to restoring law and order and ending chaos, death, and destruction! We are a country of laws, and we will prevail."
Although President Trump did not directly mention Portland in his post, Newsmax reported that protesters had been gathering in front of the Portland ICE building since June to protest the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration.
On Monday, Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum federalizing 200 Oregon National Guard members for 60 days. The order included information about a "credible threat of violence" at the Portland ICE building.
Elected leaders and officials in Portland and Oregon urged President Trump to reconsider, stating that the deployment of troops was unnecessary. Governor Tina Kotek, a Democrat, reportedly exchanged text messages with President Trump's aides, calling the president's decision "an unlawful and unwarranted act."
Governor Kotek spoke with President Trump on the phone on Saturday, and President Trump referenced this call in a speech to military leaders on Tuesday.
President Trump said, "What about Portland? It's Portland, Oregon, which looks like a war zone. And I got a call from a progressive governor. She said, 'Mr. President, don't come. We don't need you.' I said, 'Well, if they're not playing fake videos, this looks like World War II. Your city is burning down.'"
Trump continued, "I mean, it's ridiculous. She said, 'Sir, we are handling it.' I said, 'Governor, you are not handling it at all. I'm going to check it out and get back to you.' And I called back. I said, 'This is a nightmare... It's one of the worst. It's truly terrible.'"
On Monday, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, a Democrat, filed an application for a temporary restraining order to prevent the deployment of troops to Portland. A hearing is scheduled for Friday.
