U.S. President Donald Trump presents the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to Erika Kirk, the wife of right-wing youth activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last month, at the White House in Washington, D.C., on the 14th (local time). Yonhap News. U.S. President Donald Trump commemorated the right-wing youth activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last month, on the 14th (local time) and reiterated his intention to take a hardline stance against opposition forces he labeled as "far-left."
President Trump posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Kirk during a ceremony held at the White House Rose Garden that day.
The Medal of Freedom is the highest honor a U.S. president can bestow upon a civilian. Kirk’s wife, Erika, accepted the award on his behalf.
"Today, we gather to honor and remember a fearless warrior for freedom, a leader who inspired and was beloved by the next generation more than anyone I have ever seen," President Trump said.
Calling Kirk an "American hero," he stated, "He fought for freedom of speech, freedom of religion, secure borders, and a very strong and proud America. He truly put America first."
Kirk was considered a "youth icon" with a massive following among the "MAGA" faction—President Trump's core base of support—and was shot and killed at a university debate on the 10th of last month.
The award ceremony, held on what would have been Kirk’s birthday, was attended by a large contingent of key figures from the administration and the Republican Party in Congress, including the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, the House Minority Leader, the White House Chief of Staff, and the Secretaries of the Treasury, State, and Commerce, as well as Donald Trump Jr., underscoring the influence Kirk held during his lifetime.
President Trump has consistently blamed the progressive camp for Kirk's death, vowing not to stand idly by against "far-left forces" in an effort to rally his conservative base.
During the ceremony, he referred to Kirk, an evangelical Christian, as a "martyr," asserting, "We have seen mobs of far-left radicals resorting to violence and terror in desperation because they know their ideology and arguments cannot persuade anyone. They hold a demonic ideology and they are failing."
"Our country must never tolerate such far-left violence, extremism, and terror," he said. "They are hurting our country, and we are truly taking our country back, one place at a time."
