'K-Pop Demon Hunters' EJAE "Proud to be Korean... I want to win a Grammy"

"(The popularity) feels surreal. My schedule is still so packed that I don't have time to process it all. But I'm just happy and grateful."

EJAE, a Korean-American singer-songwriter who sang the part of Lumy of the girl group Huntrix in the Netflix animated film 'K-Pop Demon Hunters,' said at a press conference held in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the morning of the 15th, "Two months ago, I was just a songwriter, and suddenly I'm receiving so much love and attention. It feels unfamiliar and amazing," adding, "I feel proud and accomplished" about his triumphant return.

He stated, "The reason I wanted to participate in 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' was because I wanted to showcase Korean culture." He continued, "There were many animations about China and Japan in the US, but many children didn't even know where Korea was when they were young. I was so frustrated by this situation that I worked hard to practice Korean. I'm so grateful and proud that it resulted in such a good outcome."

The original soundtrack (OST) for 'K-Pop Demon Hunters,' sung by EJAE, Audry Nuna (Mira), and Ray Ami (Joy), achieved unprecedented success for the K-pop genre with 'Golden' topping the US Billboard Main Singles Chart 'Hot 100' and the UK Official Singles Chart 'Top 100' for eight consecutive weeks.

EJAE remarked, "Not only K-pop but everything 'K' is widely known worldwide right now. I am proud to be Korean." He added, "When people ask, 'Where are you from?' and I say I'm Korean, everyone says, 'I like K-pop.'"

EJAE participated in multiple aspects of the film's OST, including 'Golden' (lyrics and composition), 'How It's Done' (lyrics and composition), 'Takedown' (arrangement), and 'Your Idol' (lyrics).

Buoyed by the song's popularity, 'Golden' has been submitted for multiple categories at the 'Grammy Awards,' the most prestigious awards in the American popular music industry, including 'Record of the Year' and 'Song of the Year.'

EJAE expressed, "I really want to win (a Grammy). Not just in the OST category, but in other categories as well." He explained, "I intentionally made the song sound very pop-like. I also intended to make it seem like Huntrix was actually debuting in the real world."

He further commented on K-pop artists he'd like to work with, saying, "In the future, I want to collaborate with aespa in the K-pop scene. I think we would be a great match." He also mentioned, "I really like BTS too. It would be a great honor (if I got to work with them). The members are so cool, and Jungkook sings so well." Yonhap News
