Acting Police Commissioner General Yoo Jae-seong announced on the 30th that the police would correct their description of the Yeosu-Suncheon October 19th Incident (Yeosu-Suncheon Incident) as a 'rebellion'.
Responding to a question from Jeong Chun-saeng, a member of the Rebuilding Korea Party, at the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee's comprehensive audit on the day, Yoo stated, "No," when asked if the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident was a rebellion.
Previously, controversy arose when the Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency's public relations office described the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident as 'Yeosu Rebellion.' Although the title was later changed to 'Yeosu-Suncheon Incident,' Jeong pointed out that the promotional text stating, 'Significant achievements were made in suppressing the uprising and disturbances by left-wing forces on site,' remained unchanged.
Jeong criticized, "The police are promoting the history of civilian massacres that they should reflect on as achievements. This is historical distortion and a secondary victimization."
Yoo responded, "We will definitely correct this," and added, "We will conduct a comprehensive review of other provincial police agencies as well." Yonhap News
