Yoo Dong-gyu, former head of planning at Seongnam Development Corporation, who is on trial for alleged corruption in the Daejang-dong development, attends the first-instance sentencing hearing at the Seoul Central District Court on the 31st. Yonhap News. The People Power Party criticized the Democratic Party's official move to push for legislation to suspend presidential trials just three days after the first-instance ruling on the Daejang-dong development corruption case, calling it "an act of the guilty blaming the victim" and urging the resumption of the trial for President Lee Jae-myung.
Song Eon-seok, the floor leader of the People Power Party, told reporters after a party budget policy consultation meeting at the National Assembly on the 2nd that this statement was made after the Democratic Party publicly announced its plan to pursue legislation to suspend presidential trials, claiming that the People Power Party and the courts were responsible for amending the law.
Floor Leader Song stated, "If the ruling party believes that trials for the president are naturally suspended according to the Constitution, then creating a separate law is inherently contradictory," adding, "It seems like they are trying to shift responsibility by attempting to create something problematic again."
He further criticized, "It is extremely wrong to seek to suspend trials based on the unconstitutional idea that there is a hierarchy among powers and that elected power is superior to appointed power."
The People Power Party also criticized the ruling party's discussion on abolishing the crime of breach of trust. Kwak Gyu-taek, the chief deputy floor leader, stated in a commentary, "The Democratic Party has publicly declared through political legislation its intention to protect President Lee, perhaps because they themselves lack confidence in the breach of trust trial related to President Lee."
He continued, "The People Power Party has consistently argued for reducing the ambiguity and over-application of the crime of breach of trust, but the Democratic Party's objective is to completely nullify President Lee's trial," and urged, "The Democratic Party must stop this shameless act of trying to erase President Lee's alleged crimes by amending the law, even at this late hour."
Choi Bo-yoon, the party's chief spokesperson, also issued a commentary stating, "The court ruling has revealed that the Daejang-dong project is a 'major crime of unprecedented scale in Korean history.' This is a decisive judgment showing 'Lee Jae-myung's guilt'," and directly attacked, "President Lee's stalled trial must be immediately resumed."
