AI Workshop held at Seoul National University's Gwanak Campus on the 21st. Yonhap News
From oral exams to practical assignments and AI proctors.
At the "Is it Okay to Do Homework with ChatGPT?" AI workshop held at Seoul National University's Gwanak Campus on the afternoon of the 21st, professors voiced their concerns about student evaluation methods in the AI era.
This event, initially planned at the beginning of the semester, garnered even greater attention following the "AI cheating" incidents at major universities, including Seoul National University.
Park Kyung-soo, a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, stated, "In the workplace, AI, which dramatically increases productivity, should naturally be used." He added, "While it would be beneficial in education for students to learn and develop by using AI to find information, it can be counterproductive if the sole focus is on obtaining good grades."
He continued, "In the US, one professor reportedly calls in each student for an hour to ask continuous questions to assess their true understanding. Although this is very time-consuming, I believe it could be possible to create AI proctors for such evaluations."
Gong Yoo-jin, a professor in the Department of Philosophy, shared, "I have studied with students on the topic of how much AI utilization is appropriate. Since there is no single right answer regarding the extent to which AI use should be permitted, students need to consider their own guidelines."
Yang Cha-mi, a professor in the Department of Media and Information, explained, "We are designing assignments that require students to take the initiative in identifying problems themselves. Practical assignments or those that involve students physically going to see, hear, and experience things are always included."
It was also pointed out that students will continue to feel motivated to use AI if evaluation methods do not change.
Lee Doo-gap, a professor in the Department of Science, commented, "Students expect good evaluations if they get good grades, but that era seems to be over. Efforts are needed at the university and faculty level to motivate students (to learn independently)."
Seoul National University is preparing a draft AI utilization guideline, aiming for completion by the end of this month. Until now, there have been no AI guidelines within the university.
The guidelines are reportedly divided into education, research, and administration sectors, and include provisions for determining AI usage based on the instructor's policy.
