U.S. President Donald Trump has delayed his threat to impose a 10% additional tariff on Canadian imports, according to Politico, a political news outlet, on November 23 (local time).
Earlier, President Trump had announced he would impose additional tariffs after becoming enraged by a broadcast advertisement aired during the Major League Baseball (MLB) playoffs last month.
The advertisement, produced by the Ontario provincial government in Canada, featured an edited version of a radio speech by the late former President Ronald Reagan, who is considered a hero of traditional American conservatism.
The advertisement argued that tariffs would negatively impact the U.S. economy and the lives of Americans in the long run.
President Trump, who implemented reciprocal tariffs on countries worldwide shortly after taking office, characterized the advertisement as a "fraud" and claimed it distorted former President Reagan's position.
He then declared a suspension of trade negotiations with Canada and announced his intention to further increase tariffs.
However, nearly a month has passed since then, and it has been confirmed that the Trump administration has not yet instructed U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to increase tariffs.
Furthermore, U.S. importers have not received any new directives regarding tariffs, Politico reported.
Some interpret President Trump's remarks as mere threats.
There is a possibility that these were bluffs intended to steer the stalled trade negotiations with Canada in a more favorable direction.
Additionally, some suggest that the Canadian government's swift response may have appeased President Trump.
It was confirmed that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney apologized to President Trump regarding the "anti-tariff advertisement" during the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in Gyeongju last month.
Prime Minister Carney also told local media, "From the beginning, we communicated to the Ontario provincial government that the advertisement should not be aired."
Dominic LeBlanc, Canada's Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Quebec Relations, who is also Canada's chief negotiator in trade talks with the U.S., stated, "We are willing to return to the negotiating table when President Trump is ready, for an agreement that will benefit workers in both countries."
