U.S. forces have destroyed Islamic State (IS) military facilities through joint operations with Syrian government forces.
According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East, the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), led by the U.S., along with forces affiliated with Syria's Ministry of Interior, located and dismantled more than 15 IS armories in southern Syria over a four-day period from November 24 to 27.
Items found included 130 mortars and rockets, as well as assault rifles, machine guns, anti-tank mines, materials for improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and illegal narcotics.
U.S. Central Command Commander Brad Cooper emphasized, "The successes achieved against ISIS (the U.S. designation for Islamic State) will continue with this successful operation. We will aggressively pursue remaining ISIS elements in Syria."
U.S. President Donald Trump has been engaging closely with Syria, including holding a summit with interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Chara at the White House last month.
Reuters had previously reported that plans were being considered to station U.S. forces at a military airbase in Damascus, the Syrian capital, to oversee compliance if Syria and Israel were to sign a security agreement.
