The Supreme Court in Washington D.C. [Reuters Yonhap News]
The U.S. Supreme Court on the 14th (local time) again did not issue a ruling on the legality of the so-called 'reciprocal tariffs' imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on countries worldwide, including South Korea.
The Supreme Court released three rulings through its website on this day, none of which were related to reciprocal tariffs.
Reuters also reported that although the Supreme Court made three rulings on this day, it did not reach a decision on the highly anticipated dispute regarding the legality of President Trump's tariffs.
The U.S. Supreme Court only publicly announces in advance that rulings are scheduled for specific dates without disclosing the nature of the cases prior to their pronouncement.
The Supreme Court had initially indicated that rulings would be made on the 9th, leading to expectations of a tariff ruling on that day. However, one other ruling was issued. On this day as well, rulings were scheduled, but they were unrelated to tariffs.
President Trump had declared a state of emergency and applied reciprocal tariffs to various countries based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), arguing that the cumulative massive U.S. trade deficit constituted an emergency.
Consequently, lower courts ruled that using the IEEPA as a basis for imposing reciprocal tariffs was illegal. The Supreme Court has been reviewing this matter following an appeal by the Trump administration.
