U.S. President Trump [Washington AP=Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump on the 16th (local time) made remarks suggesting that the military strike against Iran, which had been under review due to the Iranian authorities' violent crackdown on protesters, has been put on hold for now.
When asked by reporters at the White House on the same day if "Arab and Israeli officials convinced you not to strike Iran," President Trump replied, "Nobody convinced me. I convinced myself."
President Trump continued, " Iran had scheduled the execution of over 800 protesters yesterday and did not proceed with it. They (Iranian authorities) canceled the executions. That had a big impact."
On the 13th, President Trump had stated that if Iranian authorities executed arrested protesters, he would take "strong action," implying that the execution of severe penalties for protesters was a "red line" that could lead to military intervention in Iran.
Therefore, President Trump's remarks about the cancellation of executions in Iran on this day can be interpreted as suggesting that military operations against Iran are not being considered at this time.
President Trump also stated on the social media platform Truth Social on the 16th, "I deeply respect the Iranian leadership for canceling all planned executions (over 800) that were scheduled for yesterday."
Meanwhile, U.S. online media Axios reported that President Trump had phone calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the evening of the 15th, following their call on the 14th, to discuss the Iran issue.
