The U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. [EPA Yonhap News]
The U.S. Supreme Court did not issue a ruling on the legality of "reciprocal tariffs" (tariffs by country) imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on various countries, including South Korea, on the 20th (local time).
The Supreme Court released three rulings on its website starting at 10 a.m. Eastern Time (midnight on the 21st, Korean time), but these were all related to cases not involving tariffs.
Reuters reported, "The U.S. Supreme Court issued three rulings today but did not decide on the highly anticipated dispute concerning the legality of President Trump's global tariffs."
The news agency added, "The court has not released a future schedule for rulings," and "The Supreme Court does not announce in advance which rulings will be made on a specific date."
Although there were expectations that a tariff ruling might be made, as the Supreme Court had previously announced that rulings would be made on the 9th and 14th, other rulings unrelated to tariffs were issued.
Upon returning to the White House last year, President Trump declared a state of emergency based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), arguing that the accumulated massive U.S. trade deficit was an emergency and that tariffs should be imposed on trading partners. He then imposed reciprocal tariffs on various countries.
In lawsuits filed thereafter, lower courts ruled that using the IEEPA as a basis for imposing reciprocal tariffs was illegal, and the Supreme Court is currently reviewing the case at the appeal of the Trump administration.
