A senior Trump administration official observed that the delay in the Supreme Court's ruling on the legality of national tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump is due to the Supreme Court recognizing the importance of the issue.

In an interview with CNBC on the 3rd (local time), U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer responded to the question of why the Supreme Court has not yet ruled by stating that the administration has collected significant revenue through tariffs and that this is not a simple case, according to Reuters.

Greer said, "We have built a new trade order based on these tariffs," adding, "There is an enormous amount at stake, and I believe the court is approaching this matter, which is related to significant national interests, with extreme caution and deliberation."

The Trump administration has argued that if the tariffs are invalidated, it would have to refund the tariffs collected to date, and the implementation of trade agreements reached with other countries using tariffs as leverage would become uncertain, causing immense damage to national interests.

Tariff lawsuits were initially expected to be resolved quickly by the Supreme Court, with possibilities of rulings as early as late last year or January of this year, but a verdict has yet to be delivered.

The legal community has assessed that the legal principles involved in this matter are relatively straightforward, thus drawing attention to the reasons for the delayed ruling.

Regarding the trade agreement with India announced by President Trump the previous day, Greer explained that India has agreed to lower tariffs on U.S. industrial goods from the current 13.5% to 0%, while India will maintain measures to protect certain agricultural products from imports.

He also stated that the two countries have reached an understanding and agreement regarding India's various "technical trade barriers," and that India will proceed with procedures to accept U.S. standards that it had not previously recognized.

However, the specific effective date of the tariff changes under this agreement was not disclosed.
