Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, speaks at a press conference at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Response Coordination Center in Washington, D.C., on January 24, 2026, about the incident in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where federal agents fatally shot Alex Petti during an attempt to arrest him. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has ordered all federal agents deployed in Minneapolis to wear body cameras immediately.
This decision is reportedly a directive from Secretary Kristi Noem amidst growing pressure from politicians and the media following several incidents involving federal operations in the city recently.
The measure, aimed at increasing transparency and providing a complete record of intervention activities carried out in the field, will apply to agents from various DHS agencies, including those from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The DHS emphasizes that body cameras will help resolve potential controversies, provide objective evidence in case of complaints, and protect both citizens and agents from unfounded accusations.
Secretary Noem has championed the initiative as an accountability tool, stating that the program could gradually be expanded to other cities nationwide.
While some civil society groups have expressed skepticism about the measure, others believe that the use of cameras could clarify intervention actions that have previously been judged solely based on partial or incomplete videos circulating on social media.
Experience accumulated by several police departments since 2020 has highlighted how full recordings provide "context" to situations that might otherwise be reduced to a few clips that go viral online.
In many cases, the release of complete footage has revealed that claims of systematic abuse, lacking evidence, were unfounded.
With this decision, the DHS is banking on a model based on verifiable facts and audiovisual records, at a time when public trust in institutions remains a central theme of political debate.
From now on, all federal government interventions in Minneapolis will be recorded, which is expected to reduce room for speculation and secure evidence.
