The won/dollar exchange rate rose to 1,400 won during trading on the first day of the month, influenced by a stronger dollar and foreign investors' net selling of stocks.
On the Seoul foreign exchange market that day, the won's exchange rate against the U.S. dollar recorded 1,400.0 won around 10:33 AM.
The exchange rate, which opened at 1,395.0 won, up 8.0 won from the previous day, saw its gains widen.
This marks the first time the rate has exceeded 1,400 won during trading in about two months, since May 19 (intraday high of 1,401.3 won).
A stronger dollar, with the dollar index – which measures the dollar's value against a basket of six major currencies – exceeding the 100 mark, appears to have driven the rise in the exchange rate.
Foreign investors' selling of stocks is also a contributing factor.
At the same time, foreigners were net sellers of 345 billion won in the stock market. The KOSPI is trading at around 3,148.63, down 2.98% from the previous day. Yonhap News Agency
