The suspect in a shooting incident that occurred on Monday afternoon on Washington D.C.'s National Mall, just blocks from the White House, has been identified as a man with a Texas driver's license.
The suspect has been identified as Michael Marck, 45, according to law enforcement officials.
As of Tuesday morning, Marck was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds to his back and legs but was not in life-threatening condition, NBC News reported.
Investigators are reviewing the suspect's digital footprint and will be executing warrants on his home and other locations, officials said.
A 15-year-old bystander was also shot in the leg but was not seriously injured. The teenager was seemingly struck by a bullet fired by the suspect, according to authorities.
Witnesses reported hearing at least five gunshots shortly after a motorcade carrying Vice President JD Vance passed through the busy area.
Deputy Director of the Secret Service Matthew Quinn said the shooting occurred after plainclothes agents approached a "suspicious individual, who appeared to be armed" at the intersection of 15th Street NW and Independence Avenue around 3:30 p.m.
The suspect fled, brandished a firearm, and fired at the agents, who returned fire, officials said.
The incident occurred as President Donald Trump was walking to the stage to attend a Small Business Summit in the East Room of the White House. Authorities evacuated reporters to the briefing room as a safety precaution, and the surrounding area was briefly locked down.
When asked if the incident was related to any other attempts on President Trump's life, Quinn said, "We thoroughly patrol this area and everywhere we patrol 24 hours a day."
"I don't know if that message was directed at the president or not, but we'll find out," he added.
