'Revocation of Prosecution Special Prosecutor' Movement Condemned by People Power Party [Yonhap News]
The People Power Party intensified its offensive on May 6th, holding consecutive condemnation rallies and general meetings of lawmakers to target the Democratic Party of Korea, which proposed the 'Special Act on Suspicions of Fabricated Investigations and Indictments by the Yoon Suk-yeol Administration'.
At the condemnation rally against the so-called fabricated indictment special prosecutor bill held at the National Assembly that afternoon, Floor Leader Song Eon-seok vehemently criticized, "In broad daylight, the person in power, the President, is mobilizing all his authority to erase all his criminal records."
He rebuked the Democratic Party, saying, "Rather, you should pledge to revoke prosecutions fairly in this local election and receive the public's judgment. Such a heinous and atrocious scheme has never existed in any era or place."
Regarding President Lee Jae-myung's request on the 4th, "Please decide on the specific timing and procedures of the special prosecutor after the Democratic Party goes through a process of gathering public opinion and deliberation," he condemned it as, "This is an utterance that completely disregards the public. Can we tolerate words spoken out of fear of public backlash before an election?"
Five-term lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun, a minority party member of the 'Special Committee for the Truth Commission on the Yoon Suk-yeol Administration's Political Prosecutors' Fabricated Indictment Suspicion Incident,' also proposed, "Political parties, civic groups, and legal circles opposing the revocation of prosecution special prosecutor bill must unite to form an emergency action organization and engage in a nationwide struggle."
Rep. Kim Hyung-dong, the floor leader of the special committee, added, "I was devastated with each progressive activity. The Democratic Party was preoccupied with turning the parliamentary audit session into a shield for Lee Jae-myung's single judicial risk, and especially the National Intelligence Service, forgetting its fundamental duty as an intelligence agency, displayed the height of political intervention by aligning with the Democratic Party's unreasonable claims."
The lawmakers then held up placards with messages such as 'Even Presidents Should Go to Jail if Guilty for Democracy' and shouted slogans like "Abolish the President's Trial, Withdraw the Special Prosecutor Bill."
Immediately after the condemnation rally, the People Power Party held a general meeting of lawmakers and heard a lecture from an expert on the special prosecutor bill.
Professor Ji Seong-woo of Sungkyunkwan University Law School pointed out, "It is an unprecedented evil law in world history and should be abolished. The investigation targets not only (President Lee) himself but also accomplice cases such as Daejang-dong, Baekhyeon-dong, and Ssangbangul North Korean remittances, which indicates a tremendous objective of allowing accomplices to have their prosecutions revoked."
Party leaders Jang Dong-hyuk and Song Eon-seok attended both the condemnation rally and the general meeting of lawmakers, concentrating the party's power.
Furthermore, the People Power Party plans to continue its confrontation with the ruling party by holding a field executive committee meeting in front of Cheong Wa Dae on the 7th.
That morning, five gubernatorial candidates from the People Power Party in the Yeongnam region, who are running in the June 3rd local elections, held a joint press conference condemning the special prosecutor bill.
The previous day, People Power Party candidates for metropolitan government heads in Gangwon and Chungcheong regions voiced their opposition to the special prosecutor bill, and on the 4th, candidates for metropolitan government heads in the Seoul metropolitan area from the People Power Party and the Reform Party also raised their voices against the bill.
