U.S. President Donald Trump visited China. [Fox News Online Capture]
It has been revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping focused on discussions regarding the expansion of American companies' market access into China as part of efforts to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.
According to the briefing materials released by the White House on X (formerly Twitter) on the 14th (local time), the leaders of the two nations closely discussed "market access for American businesses into China" as one of the measures to strengthen economic cooperation.
The President also indirectly indicated his satisfaction with the outcomes by self-assessment, stating, "It was a good meeting." He further expressed confidence in economic achievements, saying, "Many leaders from America's leading companies joined the meeting."
The White House's designation of strengthening economic cooperation, including promoting Chinese investment in the U.S., as the first agenda item in its official readout is interpreted as a strategic move to open up the Chinese market.
This can be inferred from the fact that the readout juxtaposes "increasing Chinese investment into our industries" with the expansion of U.S. companies' market access into China.
Previously, the U.S. had been urging China to open its markets, focusing on the unfairness of Chinese companies being able to operate freely within the U.S. while American companies could not pursue profit-generating activities freely in China.
In a press conference held at the White House in Washington D.C. following a high-level meeting between the U.S. and China in Geneva, Switzerland, in May of the previous year, President Trump had stated, "I never understood it, and it wasn't fair, that China did not open their markets to us. But now they've agreed to open it up completely, so it's going to be a wonderful thing for both countries and it's going to be good for harmony and peace between the two countries."
The White House's announcement that the U.S. strategy for market access in China involved discussions on increasing China's purchase of American agricultural products, expanding China's purchase of American oil, and addressing the issue of precursor chemicals for fentanyl flowing into the U.S. further supports this analysis.
This can be interpreted as a stern warning to import good products from the U.S. but hold accountable for negative imports like drugs, and a clear demonstration of a significant power imbalance. This is the backdrop against which the U.S. is seen as taking a step closer to opening the Chinese market.
Specifically, the White House stated that the leaders of the two countries made progress in cutting off the flow of fentanyl precursors into the U.S. and increasing China's purchase of American agricultural products.
In addition, the two leaders agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to ensure the free flow of energy.
The White House explained that President Xi clearly expressed his opposition to the militarization of the Strait of Hormuz and any attempts to impose tolls, and that China expressed interest in further increasing its purchases of American oil in the future to reduce its dependence on the Strait of Hormuz.
Furthermore, the White House added that the two leaders agreed that Iran should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
However, Taiwan and North Korea were not explicitly mentioned in the briefing materials.
This has led to speculation that these issues may have been deliberately kept confidential due to their sensitive nature.
Previously, a Chinese spokesperson stated that President Xi told President Trump that if the Taiwan issue is not handled properly, it could lead to clashes and conflicts between the two countries, putting the entire bilateral relationship at serious risk, a statement that was widely seen as revealing China's Achilles' heel.
When President Trump was asked by reporters after the meeting if the Taiwan issue was discussed while visiting the Temple of Heaven (a former altar where Chinese emperors worshipped), he did not give a direct answer, hinting that it was a matter the two sides had agreed to keep confidential during the talks, or that it might have been temporarily set aside in exchange for market access.
Specific confidential discussion agenda items and their outcomes are expected to be revealed later.
