Ambassador Mostan [Photo=Seoul Arts Center]
The prosecution has ordered the police to reinvestigate the case of former International Criminal Justice Ambassador Mostan, who was accused of spreading false information regarding Lee Jae-myung's youth.
Last June, Professor Tan made claims at a press conference held at the National Press Building in Washington D.C. that President Lee was involved in the murder of a girl during his youth, and was consequently sent to a juvenile detention center, preventing him from attending middle and high school. He was subsequently accused of defamation by the Freedom and Patriotism Association.
Previously, the police had dismissed the case with an opinion of "no grounds for prosecution" due to the suspect being a foreigner and the statement being made abroad, but the prosecution has overturned this decision.
Although the police determined that the case was not subject to investigation, the prosecution ruled that "the place where the defamation occurred is also included in the crime scene," and that South Korean judicial authorities have jurisdiction as the victim is in Korea.
Oh Sang-jong, the representative of the Freedom and Patriotism Association and the accuser, refuted reports that the accuser was uncooperative with the investigation, stating, "This is contrary to the facts. I actively participated, including submitting a petition urging a swift investigation."
It is known that Representative Oh Sang-jong accused Ambassador Tan with the aim of "revealing the truth about Lee Jae-myung."
Meanwhile, Professor Tan, a Korean-American, served as the International Criminal Justice Ambassador at the Department of State during the first Trump administration. He has consistently raised reasonable suspicions, such as the Chinese Communist Party's involvement in South Korean election irregularities.
