Despite the lack of significant outcomes from the recent US-China summit, Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, has expressed an optimistic outlook on exporting AI chips to China.
In an interview with Bloomberg TV on the 18th (local time), Huang stated, "The Chinese government has to decide to what extent it wants to protect its market. My assessment is that the market will open up over time."
He explained that during his visit to China as part of the business delegation accompanying President Donald Trump for the summit, he did not directly discuss the sale of the AI chip 'H200' with Chinese officials.
"President Trump had several conversations with the leadership (in China)," he added, "and I am waiting to see what decisions both sides will make."
Upon his return from China, President Trump had previously commented on the H200 chip issue, saying, "It was mentioned, and I think there might be some progress," without elaborating on specifics.
However, Jamie Lee, the US Trade Representative, stated in a media interview at the time that discussions on semiconductor export controls were not a major topic of the US-China summit.
Meanwhile, The Information reported today that Lenovo, a Chinese PC and server manufacturer, recently notified its employees in an internal memo that there have been no changes to licenses or policies related to the H200 chip since the US permitted its export to China in March.
Despite the US easing export restrictions, NVIDIA continues to face difficulties in sales to China, as Chinese companies are unable to purchase the H200 chip due to China's own regulations.
Huang was reportedly not originally included in President Trump's delegation to China, but he joined the President's flight during a refueling stop in Alaska on the 12th.
Huang's inclusion at the time was seen as a positive signal for H200 chip sales to China, leading to a surge in NVIDIA's stock price, with its market capitalization briefly soaring to $5.7 trillion intraday.
However, as the summit concluded without any notable achievements, the stock price subsequently declined. NVIDIA's market capitalization stood at $5.38 trillion today.
