  • Convicted of embezzlement of donations, pardon discussed during probation period
  • The public outcry is expected to pour in if "anyone and everyone buys it."

Yoon Mi-hyang, a former proportional representative, answers questions at the National Assembly Communication Center in May 2000 regarding suspicions that arose during her tenure with the The Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance for the Issues of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan (Jeonguiund). Yonhap News

Yoon Mi-hyang, whose prison sentence has been finalized for embezzlement of funds for comfort women victims, has been included as a candidate for a special amnesty during Liberation Day under the Lee Jae-myung administration, according to domestic media reports on the 8th, including the Chosun Ilbo.

According to related reports, Yoon, a former proportional representative, was indicted on eight charges, including embezzlement of funds from elderly comfort women victims, and her sentence of 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year probation was finalized. However, she was considered for the special amnesty review for Liberation Day.

The Ministry of Justice's Amnesty Review Committee held a meeting on the 7th to review and recommend amnesty and restoration of rights for individuals who have been convicted, including Cho Kuk, former leader of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, and his wife, Chung Kyung-sim, who were each sentenced to two years in prison for their child's college admission irregularities, and Choi Kang-wook (former lawmaker), who issued a false intern certificate to Cho's son. If reports of Yoon Mi-hyang, who has not yet completed her sentence, being included are true, strong public backlash is inevitable.

Yoon leveraged her history of working with the Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance for the Issues of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan (Jeonguiund) to support comfort women victims, securing a parliamentary seat as a proportional representative for the Platform Party (a satellite party of the Democratic Party) in the April 2020 general election. However, in May of the same year, a comfort women victim, Ms. Lee Yong-soo, held a press conference alleging that Yoon had "exploited the grandmothers for 30 years," raising suspicions of embezzlement of donations, which led to an investigation, according to Weekly Chosun.

Yoon was on trial from before her term as a lawmaker began until its end. Her final guilty verdict from the Supreme Court came in November of last year, more than six months after her term concluded. This took a total of 4 years and 2 months.

Regarding the rumors of Yoon's potential amnesty, strong public criticism is forming, with sentiments like "even dogs and pigs get amnesty." A representative from the Ministry of Justice's spokesperson office evaded a direct answer when contacted by the Daily Hankook Ilbo on the 8th, stating, "We are not aware of the exact details, so please send an email for an official inquiry."
