U.S. President Donald Trump descends from his plane, Air Force One, at Andrews Joint Base in Maryland on the 22nd (local time). [AP Yeonhap News] The Donald Trump administration in the United States is preparing to resume attacks against Iran, and in preparation, President Trump and other government officials have canceled their personal holiday plans, CBS News reported.
As of the afternoon of the 22nd, no decision had been made on whether to carry out airstrikes.
The last Monday in May, the 25th, is Memorial Day in the United States, making May 23-25 a three-day holiday weekend.
President Trump announced on social media that he would be unable to attend the wedding of his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and his fiancée, Kimberly Guilfoyle, which was scheduled for this weekend, due to "circumstances involving the administration."
The marriage license was issued on the 21st in West Palm Beach, Florida, and the bride and groom are reportedly heading to a small island in the Bahamas for the wedding ceremony and reception.
President Trump had planned to spend the holiday weekend at his golf course in New Jersey, but he is now expected to return to the White House, CBS News reported.
CBS News also reported that some officials from the U.S. military and intelligence agencies have canceled their personal holiday plans, similar to President Trump.
Government officials in the defense and intelligence sectors have begun updating muster rolls for overseas U.S. military bases as some troops stationed in the Middle East are being rotated out of the battlefield.
This is part of an effort to reduce the U.S. military presence in the region amid concerns about potential Iranian retaliation, CBS News explained.
The United States and Iran began a temporary ceasefire on April 8 and have largely refrained from mutual attacks to buy time for indirect talks aimed at a long-term agreement.
Anna Kelly, a White House press officer, stated in an interview with CBS News that President Trump's firm stance is that Iran will never be allowed to possess nuclear weapons or maintain stockpiles of enriched uranium. "The President always keeps all options on the table, and it is the responsibility of the Department of Defense to be prepared to execute any decision the Commander-in-Chief may make," she said.
"The President has been clear about the consequences if Iran does not reach an agreement," she added.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran warned on the 20th that if the United States or Israel launch further attacks against Iran, the conflict could escalate beyond the Middle East, vowing to deliver "crippling blows" from "places you can't even imagine."
The United States reportedly delivered a "final proposal" to Iran on the 20th and warned that military attacks would resume if Iran did not accept it.
President Trump said on the 22nd that "Iran desperately wants a deal" and that he would monitor the situation.
A response from Iran is expected to be delivered soon through Pakistani Army Chief of Staff Asim Munir, who has been mediating.
