The aftermath of the strategic missteps in Starbucks Korea's "Tank Day" marketing is truly adding insult to injury and becoming increasingly complex.

The President personally addressed the issue at a Cabinet meeting, expressing his fury. The Minister of the Interior and Safety publicly hinted at a boycott of Starbucks, and in response, other government ministries sequentially joined in this unprecedented situation.

Furthermore, a witch hunt is underway, with one actor being forced to withdraw from a musical they were appearing in simply for posting photos of themselves at a Starbucks store on social media in the past.

Witnessing the entire left-wing faction of the nation launching a full-scale offensive, intertwined with the political interests of the upcoming June 3rd local elections, leaves a bitter aftertaste regarding today's reality, where national division and ideological oppression have reached their peak.

Demonization Strategy Mobilized by a Power Group

The most common and potent tool used by a particular faction to maintain its political and social hegemony is the "demonization" strategy, which targets influential figures and turns them into public pariahs.

Entrepreneurs who represent the values of a market economy and liberal democracy, or who do not conform to the vested interests of their faction, become prime targets. The ideological offensive, which began during the Moon Jae-in administration, has intensified, now involving not only the highest-ranking officials up to President Lee Jae-myung but also the entire left-wing faction of government employee unions across the country.

The "Starbucks coffee boycott movement" and the "destruction of Chairman Chung Yong-jin," which involve such a massive mobilization of a powerful group launching an unbridled offensive, are the most destructive instances of ideological oppression, demonstrating how the nation's highest power can systematically demonize and isolate an individual private entrepreneur.

In the recent series of attacks targeting Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin, and the current left-wing faction's move to link these attacks with the May 18th Democratization Movement and the Starbucks coffee controversy, we witness a serious ideological distortion.

This goes beyond mere criticism of a company. It is a quintessential example of "double distortion argumentation," where historical pain is consumed as a tool for partisan attacks, simultaneously stimulating public emotions to brand an entrepreneur as a social evil.

Arbitrary Editing and Distortion of Facts

The primary distortion in the left-wing faction's demonization of Chairman Chung Yong-jin begins with the arbitrary editing of facts, transforming his liberal convictions expressed through social media in the past or his communications as an entrepreneur into "anti-social outbursts" or "insults to specific historical events."

A prime example is the controversy surrounding "Starbucks coffee and the May 18th tanks," which has been amplified and reproduced online. This narrative skillfully connects the fact that he is the head of a company operating a popular consumer brand, Starbucks, with the visual image of a "tank," a piece of military equipment used in past suppression.

By combining an entrepreneur's personal remarks, the everyday marketing of Shinsegae affiliates, or words from unrelated matters, they have distorted and fabricated facts to create the implication that Chairman Chung Yong-jin mocked or endorsed the tragic suppression of the May 18th Democratization Movement. This is a deceptive tactic that manipulates public perception by connecting issues lacking causality or objective evidence into a single line, leading to misunderstanding.

Secondary Distortion Through Association with May 18th: Value Manipulation and Anti-Historical Stigma

After creating artificial connections through the primary distortion, the secondary distortion stage brings the "May 18th Democratization Movement," a sanctified historical symbol in Korean society, to the forefront.

First is the instrumentalization of historical pain. The May 18th Democratization Movement is a significant pain in our modern history, an event filled with noble sacrifice. However, instead of placing this historical tragedy within the realm of national reconciliation or objective commemoration, the left-wing faction instrumentalizes it as an ideological weapon to attack those who stand against them.

Second is emotional incitement and stigma. By forcibly linking Chairman Chung Yong-jin and Starbucks with the image of "tanks" that suppressed the Gwangju Democratization Movement, they impose an extreme, dichotomous value judgment on the public: "Chung Yong-jin is an anti-historical force," and "consuming Shinsegae products is an act of condoning injustice." Through this, a reversal of values is completed, aiming to completely bury the entrepreneur's legitimate business activities and ideological freedom.

This double distortion causes the public to lose rational judgment and become engulfed in emotional anger, leading to blind hatred and boycott movements rather than legitimate criticism.

Preventing the Privatization of Historical Power and Patriotic Reflection

I am convinced that the practice of demonizing entrepreneurs and dividing the nation by using historical pain as a tool for political disputes is an ideological malady that our society urgently needs to eradicate. The noble value of the May 18th Democratization Movement is not the exclusive property of a particular faction, and it should not be used as a blade to socially ostracize someone.

Now, the citizens of the Republic of Korea must possess the wisdom to not be swayed by such sophisticated double distortion frames. Protecting the foundation of a free market economy where entrepreneurs can freely conduct business and express their beliefs, and shattering the deception of forces that politically exploit historical pain, is the true meaning of patriotism and the defense of the rule of law.

When we move towards a mature society based on objective facts and reason, beyond emotional incitement, the Republic of Korea will be able to heal ideological conflicts and achieve true prosperity. Today, young people in Gwanghwamun are holding cups bearing the logo of a specific brand, creating a peculiar scene of worship and reverence as if it were a sacred offering bestowed by modern capitalism.
