The legal team representing President Yoon Suk-yeol has drawn attention by stating that "the first acquittal in a sedition-related case is highly significant," and expressing expectations for further acquittals in subsequent trials.
Bae Eui-cheol, one of President Yoon's lawyers, issued a statement on the 28th (KST) regarding the first-instance acquittal in a case where he was indicted for perjury during the trial of former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, and made the aforementioned remarks.
Earlier, the Seoul Central District Court pronounced its verdict in President Yoon's perjury case on the same day, acquitting him.
President Yoon was indicted on charges of providing false testimony during the former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo's sedition trial last year, claiming that there was a plan from the outset to go through National State Council procedures at the time of declaring martial law. The special prosecutor had sought a two-year prison sentence, but the court ruled for acquittal.
In his statement, lawyer Bae stated, "Today, President Yoon was acquitted in the perjury case related to his remarks on emergency martial law." He added, "We are grateful to the court for courageously issuing an acquittal based on legal principles and the law."
He further commented, "However, it is truly regrettable that the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law are eroding to the extent that we must anxiously await an obvious outcome."
Regarding the acquittal, lawyer Bae pointed out, "This is a ruling based on legal principles and evidence," and stated, "The first acquittal in a sedition-related case is highly significant."
He declared, "This is just the beginning," and expressed his anticipation for acquittals to continue in other upcoming trials. Lawyer Bae added, "The next verdict will be for the treason case (June 12th). If a just response to North Korea's over 6,000 balloons of trash and provocation is found guilty, it would be no different from the collapse of South Korea's defense and security. Therefore, we expect a verdict of not guilty based on the court's convictions for the treason case as well."
Lawyer Bae emphasized, "Emergency martial law is a legitimate power of the President under the Constitution," and asserted, "If the sedition trial is judged solely based on legal principles, it can never result in a guilty verdict."
He concluded by stating, "Just as with today's acquittal, I believe that even a seemingly plausible house built on the sand of falsehoods will inevitably crumble before the winds of history and truth." He pledged, "The President's legal team will do its utmost to the end, with the resolve to leave a record of truth in history."
