Kim Se-ui, head of the Garo Sero Institute, attending a warrant examination [Yonhap News File Photo]
Kim Se-ui, head of the Garo Sero Institute, who is accused of spreading false information, including that the cause of death of the late actor Kim Sae-ron was due to pressure from actor Kim Soo-hyun's debt, has requested the court to re-examine the legality of his detention.
1. According to legal circles, Kim's side filed a request for a detention review on May 31, five days after his arrest on charges of defamation and other offenses, with the Seoul Central District Court.
The hearing for the detention review is scheduled to take place around 2:10 PM on the 2nd.
A detention review is a procedure in which the court re-examines the legality and necessity of an investigation conducted under detention.
The purpose is to review whether the detention is legal or illegal, and whether continued detention is necessary.
The court must interrogate the suspect and examine evidence within 48 hours of the detention review request being filed.
Kim Se-ui has been under investigation for allegedly spreading false facts through YouTube, claiming that Kim Soo-hyun dated Kim Sae-ron when she was a minor, and that the direct cause of Kim Sae-ron's death was pressure from Kim Soo-hyun's side to repay debts.
He is also accused of defaming Kim Soo-hyun by manipulating Kim Sae-ron's voice using artificial intelligence (AI) and fabricating statements such as, "I first had sexual relations with Kim Soo-hyun during the winter vacation of my second year of middle school."
The police believe that Kim acted in this manner, knowing it was false, to gain public attention.
Kim had made these claims at a press conference with Kim Sae-ron's family in March last year.
The Gangnam Police Station, which investigated the case for about a year, concluded that Kim manipulated the recorded statements with AI, as claimed by Kim Soo-hyun's side.
Accordingly, the police applied for an arrest warrant on the 14th with numerous charges, including violations of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes, defamation, threat, and attempted coercion. On May 26, the Seoul Central District Court ordered Kim's detention, stating that "there is a risk of evidence destruction and flight."
