  • Three unsolved mysteries amidst conflicting records: will, age, and demotion.

Andong Youngmyung School

Three months have passed since the body of Vice Principal Nam of Andong Youngmyung School (Yongga Education Foundation) was discovered on May 19, yet the questions surrounding the incident remain unresolved. The bereaved family wishes for privacy, stating, "We have now respectfully laid our father, who lived a difficult life, to rest beside our mother. Please refrain from discussing his death."

Some media outlets, particularly News1, reported, citing the family's statement, that "Vice Principal Nam's suicide note mentioned severe depression and self-loathing." However, in a phone conversation with this reporter, it was confirmed that this information was based on the family's statement obtained by the police, and the actual suicide note, its copy, or handwriting analysis documents have not been disclosed. Consequently, the report is being consumed as fact without resolving the question of whether the suicide note actually exists.

The year of birth confirmed by the family for Vice Principal Nam is 1957, making him 53 years old at the time of his disappearance in 2010. However, the News1 report states, "He established a special school with fellow Principal B in 1971."

At that time, he was only 14 years old and had not yet entered university. The official founding year of Youngmyung School (Yongga Education Foundation) is 1972. His name is also not on the list of foundation founders. In an essay published in the November 1989 issue of 《Saemteo》, Vice Principal Nam stated, "I have been teaching at a special school for 12 years," suggesting his actual employment began around 1977.

In relation to this, the family conveyed through a News1 reporter to Hanmi Ilbo that "Vice Principal Nam was born in '57 and met Chairman Bae while attending university in '77, where he began working as a teacher at Youngmyung School."

The founder of Yongga Education Foundation was Bae Yeon-chang, the former chairman, who also established (Foundation) Andong Aemyung Welfare Village in 1986. When Chairman Bae passed away from a chronic illness in 2009, the foundation's management and the principal position were transferred to Nam Suk-ja, the second chairman (presumed to be Chairman Bae's wife). During this process, it is rumored that Vice Principal Nam was "transferred to a rural branch school, effectively demoted." His son's death also reportedly caused him shock. However, no official records or documents supporting this claim, other than the family's assertion of suicide, have been found.

News1's exclusive report on Vice Principal Nam is shadowed by three mysteries: the discrepancy in his birth year and the school's founding year, the personnel reshuffle and the existence of a branch school, and the actual existence of the suicide note. Despite these circumstances, the Andong Police have closed the case as 'suicide.' As crucial evidence and records remain non-public, it is impossible to approach the truth without credible verification and the release of these records.

[Comprehensive Interpretation of Related Article Comments]

The comments on the article about the discovery of Vice Principal Nam's body fall into three main categories. First, a grieving category expressing sympathy and acknowledging the deceased's life and dedication. Second, a critical category questioning the reliance on the 'suicide note' report as grounds for concluding suicide and cautioning against definitive language in media reporting. Third, a blame-assigning category believing that a specific individual or group cornered Vice Principal Nam.

Some comments, while mentioning personal experiences of having worked hard for the deceased, expressed complex emotions by using the proverb "You reap what you sow." This indicates that beyond simple mourning, there is a societal sentiment in the local community interwoven with distrust of the incident's background and questions of accountability.
