“The real nature of Chinese-led public opinion manipulation is being revealed by X’s surprise disclosure of connection countries. This is the second Druking incident.”
Following his statement that "nationality should be displayed in comments," Joo Jin-woo, a member of the People Power Party, asserted that "public opinion manipulation by Chinese accounts is the second Druking incident."
On his Facebook feed on the 26th, Joo stated, "X introduced a feature allowing the display of connection locations to be changed from 'Country' to 'Continent'. As a result, many Lee Jae-myung supporter accounts simultaneously changed their connection location to 'East Asia'," adding, "If one is Korean, there is no reason to hide their Korean nationality and mark it as East Asia."
He further revealed that he has initiated an investigation into the situation, stating, "Many accounts that vehemently supported candidate Lee Jae-myung, masquerading as Koreans, were connected from China. This is interference in our internal affairs and election meddling."
Joo also commented, "We will pursue this to the end through criminal charges. It is a clear crime, including obstruction of business and violation of the Public Official Election Act, and a plot threatening the liberal democracy of the Republic of Korea."
Meanwhile, on the 25th, Joo stated that "SNS accounts that posted numerous posts harshly criticizing the People Power Party were accounts connected from China," and argued that "nationality should be displayed in comments."
Joo explained, "A nationality display system has been introduced on X (formerly Twitter). Controversy is escalating as a large number of accounts, appearing to be Korean, were found to be connected from China. The 'Gunjuminsu Account,' opened on X in January 2019, posted 65,200 messages harshly criticizing the People Power Party."
He expressed indignation, stating, "This averages 26 posts per day over seven years, which cannot be considered normal SNS activity. Upon checking the publicly disclosed connection locations, they were found to be in China."
He also emphasized the need for fundamental measures, similar to the mandatory international call display to combat voice phishing, and stressed that the 'Comment Nationality Display Act' proposed by the People Power Party must be passed, adding, "Domestic portal sites currently do not display nationality even when commenting."
X recently introduced the 'About this account' feature on user profiles, allowing users to check basic information such as the country of account operation and username change history. This feature provides information on △account usage country △date of first registration △number of name changes △app connection location, etc.
