President Donald Trump has declared he will cut off all support to South Africa.
In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, he stated that the reason the United States did not attend the G20 summit in South Africa was "because the South African government refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific human rights abuses suffered by the descendants of Afrikaner, Dutch, French, and German immigrants."
In May, President Trump had explicitly pointed out to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during his White House visit that a genocide was underway if white farmers were being murdered.
In his Truth Social post, Trump also stated, "To be more direct, they are allowing white people to be murdered and their farms to be taken away randomly."
He then directly addressed the ills of the left-wing fake news media.
President Trump said, "Perhaps the most serious problem is that The New York Times, which is soon to go out of business, and the fake news media are not criticizing this massacre. This is precisely why all the liars and hypocrites of the radical left-wing media are falling!"
Left-wing media outlets have reported that the persecution of "Afrikaners," referring to the descendants of white settlers who came to South Africa from Europe in the 17th century, is a conspiracy theory far from the truth, according to prevailing assessments.
President Trump also declared, "At the closing ceremony of the G20, South Africa refused to hand over the G20 chairmanship to the high-level representative of our U.S. Embassy who attended the closing ceremony. Therefore, by my instructions, South Africa will not be invited to the 2026 G20 summit, which will be held in the great city of Miami, Florida, next year."
"South Africa has proven to the world that it is a nation that does not belong anywhere, and we will immediately cease all payments and subsidies to them. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Trump added.
South Africa's deep ties with China have also drawn the ire of the Trump administration. In 2024, South Africa announced an upgrade of its relationship with China to a "comprehensive strategic partnership for a new era," deepening cooperation on global and economic issues.
In 2025, South Africa and Chinese business groups signed agreements to strengthen economic relations, with China planning to abolish tariffs on imports from several African countries, and South Africa also planning to leverage these ties to expand exports of agricultural products and other goods.
Furthermore, China and South Africa, as members of BRICS, are conducting joint military exercises. South Africa has also included Chinese language in its national education system since 2015, the first country in Africa to do so.
Instead of sending a U.S. delegation to the G20 summit held in South Africa on the 22nd and 23rd, the Trump administration instructed the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires in South Africa to attend the closing ceremony to receive the gavel.
In response, President Ramaphosa felt insulted and omitted the handover ceremony, effectively refusing to pass on the gavel.
