Venezuela's military announced on the 2nd (local time) that it had shot down an aircraft suspected of drug smuggling, facing high-intensity pressure from the U.S. military focused on blocking drug trafficking.
Domingo Hernández Lárez, commander of the Strategic Operations Command of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces of Venezuela (FANB), posted related photos and videos on his Instagram on the same day, stating, "Our military, while conducting an operation to defend national sovereignty, identified an unidentified trace within our airspace and shot down the aircraft."
The post shows something resembling an aircraft flying in the sky and an object engulfed in flames on the ground.
Commander Lárez emphasized that the aircraft "did not transmit an identification code, had its transponder turned off, and did not respond to calls and communication procedures," and that related flight plan documents had also not been submitted.
The Venezuelan military added that it designated the aircraft as a 'target of interest' for crimes such as drug smuggling and took neutralizing measures.
Commander Lárez further stated that since the enactment of related laws in 2012, 418 aircraft have been neutralized through the Venezuelan military's airspace defense operations, with 27 recorded this year alone.
This action comes amidst an unusual surge in U.S. military activity around Venezuela.
The U.S. government, labeling President Maduro as the "head of a drug trafficking organization," has significantly augmented its forces in the Caribbean, deploying the largest number of troops in decades, and has ordered attacks on vessels deemed "drug carriers."
The U.S. military has caused at least 83 deaths in this process, including cases that are sparking controversy over "war crimes" due to secondary attacks on survivors.

The Venezuelan government has characterized the U.S. military operations as "imperialist intervention aimed at overthrowing the government" and is preparing for resistance by mobilizing not only the army, navy, and air force but also the Militia.
Some have speculated that the Maduro government, considering the reality of the Venezuelan military's absolute inferiority in terms of equipment and troop numbers, might be devising an "anarchization strategy" to create internal social chaos through guerrilla-style small-scale combat, making foreign military control difficult.
Despite this, President Maduro is seen as using this situation to express his determination to curb drug crime within his country to the international community and wage a propaganda war, arguing for the "unjustness of U.S. pressure."
Earlier last month, the Venezuelan president directly sang John Lennon's "Imagine" in a public address, conveying a message of peace and coexistence, and stated, "I appeal to the American people that there should be no eternal war in the Caribbean and South America."
In addition, Venezuelan authorities announced that they would continue to allow the landing of U.S.-bound immigrant repatriation flights, which operate twice a week, at the request of the Trump administration.
This situation is markedly different from President Trump's remarks over the weekend that "Venezuelan airspace should be considered closed," which further escalated tensions.
The Venezuelan Ministry of Transportation issued a statement on the same day stating, "We have received documentation from the U.S. side requesting the resumption of immigrant repatriation flights from that country to Venezuela," and explained that, under President Maduro's directive, they have approved the aircraft's entry into Venezuelan airspace and landing at airports within the territory.
The Associated Press reported that some 13,000 people have entered Venezuela from the U.S. via chartered flights numerous times this year alone.
