President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday that the United States would soon begin airstrikes to interdict drug shipments from Venezuela to the U.S. by land.
The President explained the move was necessary to protect American society by disrupting cartel-led drug distribution networks that have flourished under the collapsing socialist regime of Nicolas Maduro.
The announcement came amid heightened regional tensions after U.S. forces intercepted a sanctioned Venezuelan oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast on Wednesday.
The operation was the largest maritime interdiction of its kind, officials told Reuters.
Federal security agencies told Reuters the vessel was linked to illicit oil-moving schemes involving Venezuelan and Iranian networks that had been operating outside international law for a long time.
Media outlets, including CNBC, reported that sources familiar with the ongoing discussions believe additional oil tankers may soon be seized in a similar fashion as the administration increases pressure on the Maduro regime’s dwindling oil trade.
The initial operation was a show of force to disrupt financial channels that sustain criminal organizations across the Americas, the Times reported, a joint effort by the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, Coast Guard, and U.S. military personnel.
The planned land strikes would build upon a series of interdiction operations that have taken place in the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific, according to Reuters and AP. In those areas, U.S. military forces have struck numerous vessels suspected of transporting drugs bound for the U.S.
At least 87 people have died as a result of U.S. military ship interdictions since airstrikes began in September, according to the latest reports.
Supporters of the President's strategy say Trump is acting within his constitutional authority. They say a strong response to drug cartels is a welcome change after years of lukewarm actions by previous administrations.
Proponents argue that the approach puts long-overdue pressure on the Maduro dictatorship, which they say has become a willing conduit for traffickers who pose a direct threat to American homes.
Acting Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told AP that cartel networks are increasingly resembling terrorist organizations and must be met with decisive action before they reach American shores.
Critics counter that most of the fentanyl entering the U.S. is supplied by Mexico and China, not Venezuela. NPR reported that analysts are questioning whether the South American operations could significantly reduce input.
Legal experts cited by The Guardian warned that striking land routes without explicit congressional approval could trigger war powers issues and international challenges.
Opposition within Congress has already introduced resolutions limiting President Trump's authority, arguing that the operations could escalate into a wider regional conflict.
President Maduro vowed to fight against what he called foreign aggression, while Russian officials criticized Washington's stance, according to Reuters.
Presidential supporters argue that enemies only understand force and that President Trump's willingness to act sends a clear message that the era of condoning security threats is over.
Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced Thursday he had handed over protection of California's border region to the U.S. Navy, thereby bolstering border security while simultaneously preparing for wartime readiness.
