In a commentary on a massive fraud case involving dozens of Somali immigrants in Minnesota, President Donald Trump referred to Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), a Somali-born congresswoman, criticizing her for "complaining all the time" and alleging that she "married her brother to get into the country."
"Trump may have gotten the details wrong, but he got the essence of the story right," said Scott Johnson, who has been reporting on Omar's marriage case since 2016. Johnson has been covering the case through Power Line, a Minnesota-based website he co-founded.
Sources indicate that Omar allegedly sought to facilitate her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who was living a homosexual life and had been granted asylum in London, to exit his marriage.
Somali sources told Johnson that Ilhan Omar entered the country by posing as a member of the Omar family, and that her brother and other family members had been granted asylum in the UK. Furthermore, social media posts show siblings, purportedly from different families, referring to each other as 'brother' and 'sister'.
The 2009 marriage certificate of Elmi and Omar, both Muslims, is signed by Willisia Harris, a Christian minister. This occurred seven years after Omar had filed a marriage certificate with Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her children.
Interestingly, Omar jointly filed her income tax returns for 2014 and 2015 with Ahmed Hirsi. This was during the period when Omar was legally married to Elmi.
According to reports, Omar and Elmi separated in 2011, and she filed for divorce from Elmi in 2017, one year after becoming a Minnesota state representative.
Historian Dominic Green, a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, wrote:
"The allegation that Omar engaged in immigration and education fraud with a certain Ahmed Said Elmi has been persistently made and corroborated by credible sources, yet it is summarily dismissed, along with the claim that he may be her brother. She does not even mention Elmi by name, describing the man with whom she was married for (eight) years as someone 'I had minimal contact with, and who would not have been even a footnote in my story if not for the fact that this became a major headline later.' In fact, address records show that Omar was cohabiting with her first husband (Muslim marriage) even while married to her second husband (civil marriage). When she filed for divorce from her second husband in 2017, she stated under penalty of perjury that she had had no contact with her first husband since 2011. Dozens of now-deleted social media posts, photographs, and a 2016 interview suggest she may have lied."
Omar entered into a civil marriage with Hirsi, her first husband, in 2018 but separated in 2019. She married her policy advisor, Tim Mynett, in 2020.
All of this has been reported by a range of media outlets, from the left-leaning Minnesota Star Tribune to the right-leaning Spectator, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
Despite numerous reporters' earnest requests for interviews with Omar and her family to ascertain the truth, Omar has refused to be interviewed.
