An engineering unit from North Korea, which was deployed to Kursk, Russia, and involved in mine removal, has returned and received a grand welcome from Chairman Kim Jong Un.
North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on the 13th that "Commanders and soldiers of the Korean People's Army engineering units who were dispatched to overseas operational areas have returned home after successfully completing their assigned military missions, bringing back triumphant achievements." The report stated that a welcome ceremony was held the previous day at the square in front of the April 25 House of Culture in Pyongyang for the '528th Engineering Regiment'.
In his speech, Chairman Kim praised the unit, stating, "The regiment, organized on May 28th, was dispatched in early August and achieved remarkable successes in its engineering combat missions in Kursk Oblast, Russian Federation, liberated by our comrades with their lives."
He evaluated their contributions by saying they achieved a "miracle of transforming vast, dangerous areas, difficult to conquer even in several years, into safe zones in less than three months." He added that their achievements were "supported by the devoted struggle and merits of signal corps soldiers and military officials."
He continued, "The noble blood and sweat, the precious sacrifices made by (the engineering unit), will never be in vain. Although there were nine regrettable sacrifices, we express our repeated gratitude that all commanders and soldiers of the engineering regiment have returned."
Furthermore, he emphasized, "The noble ideological sentiment of our soldiers is unmatched by any other country's army. Even with the most advanced weaponry, the Western armed villains cannot dare to confront such a revolutionary army with an immeasurable spiritual depth."

The welcome ceremony was attended by participants of the plenary meeting of the Workers' Party held from the 9th to 11th, commanders of major combined units from the Ministry of National Defense and the Korean People's Army, soldiers, Pyongyang citizens, and families of the deployed unit. High-ranking military officials, including Jo Yong Won, Organization Secretary of the Workers' Party, No Kwang Chol, Minister of National Defense, Ri Yong Gil, Chief of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army, Kim Kwang Hyok, Commander of the Air Force, and Park Kwang Sop, Commander of the Navy, were present.
Chairman Kim declared the awarding of the First Class Order of National Freedom to the engineering regiment. The nine fallen combatants were posthumously awarded the title of 'Hero of the Republic,' the First Class Order of the National Flag, and the First Class Order of the Warrior's Honor.
He personally placed medals on the portraits of the fallen soldiers displayed on the 'Wall of Remembrance' in the central hall of the April 25 House of Culture, laid a wreath, and observed a moment of silence. Performances celebrating the return of the deployed unit and a welcome banquet were also held.
North Korean state media reported photos showing Chairman Kim embracing a wounded soldier in a wheelchair and comforting the bereaved families of fallen soldiers, emphasizing his special care for the deployed unit.
Chairman Kim also confessed, "From the moment we had to send engineering unit combatants to that dangerous place, just as we waited for the special operation unit combatants who participated in the liberation battles (in Kursk), every single day of the past 120 days has truly felt like ten years have passed."
This appears to be an attempt to prevent public discontent arising from the deployment by frankly highlighting the Supreme Leader's personal 'anguish' and emotions.

Previously, North Korea had deployed special forces to Kursk, occupied by Ukrainian forces, starting in October last year to participate in recapture operations.
Subsequently, during Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu's visit to Pyongyang in June of this year, it was decided to send an additional 1,000 engineering troops for mine removal and 5,000 military construction personnel in two brigades for infrastructure reconstruction.
North Korea's decision to send additional engineering troops was initially known only through the Russian announcement at the time. North Korea had remained silent on the matter and only recently revealed the details of the engineering deployment, its duration, and the number of casualties during this welcome ceremony for the returning unit.
Hong Min, a senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification, stated, "It appears that some of the combat engineers who were at the forefront, playing roles in mine removal and explosive ordnance disposal, have returned."
Based on Chairman Kim's expression of "crossing the line between life and death" and the North Korean media's description of "engineering unit combatants who fearlessly charge into minefields and flames to open a path for victory," it is evident that they performed their missions in extremely dangerous environments.

North Korea's extensive highlighting of the sacrifices and contributions of its soldiers deployed to Russia serves not only as a means of consolidating the regime but is also interpreted as an indirect message demanding compensation from Russia.
Hong stated, "North Korea will continuously and repeatedly emphasize the sacrifices it has made to Russia, and it is a way to continue emphasizing these sacrifices so that Russia can fulfill its role as an ally."
