Three photos related to the unrest in Iran have garnered significant attention.
First, there is an image of a lone protester standing defiantly before Iranian riot police on motorcycles. This photo has become a topic of discussion as it is reminiscent of the "Tank Man" who single-handedly confronted tanks in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in June 1989.
The "Tank Man" refers to an unidentified protester who, on June 5, 1989, the day after the violent crackdown of the Tiananmen Square incident, blocked a procession of 18 tanks on Chang'an Avenue in Beijing with his body alone. This individual was immediately removed, and his subsequent whereabouts remain unconfirmed.
As of 2026, China refers to the Tiananmen Square incident as the "June Fourth Incident" (六四事件) or completely bans its mention. Furthermore, the country is busy with historical revisionism, such as blocking searches for the term "Tank Man."
The situation in Iran is currently developing at an extremely rapid pace. Enraged by the dire economic conditions, crowds have taken to the streets, chanting anti-establishment slogans such as "Death to the dictator" and "Death to Khamenei."
The fact that protesters are mentioning the absolute ruler Khamenei indicates the desperation of the situation.
The prominent U.S. media outlet New York Post reported, "Iran is currently engulfed in the largest wave of protests since 2022," and "at least 7 people have died in this process."
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning on Truth Social on the 2nd (local time), stating, "If Iran violently kills peaceful protesters by shooting them, the United States will save them."
