President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Venezuela is transferring 30 million to 50 million barrels of crude oil to the United States, and the proceeds will benefit both the Venezuelan and American people.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social just days after authorizing U.S. military operations to remove socialist hardliner Nicolas Maduro from power in Venezuela.
In his post, President Trump stated, "I am pleased to announce that the interim Venezuelan authorities will be transferring 30-50 million barrels of high-quality, sanctioned crude oil to the United States."
He added, "This oil will be sold at market prices, and I, as President of the United States, will manage the proceeds to ensure they benefit both the Venezuelan and American people!"
Delcy Rodriguez was sworn in as interim president of Venezuela on Monday. Rodriguez has expressed her willingness to cooperate with Washington.
Trump concluded his post by saying, "I have instructed Secretary of Energy Chris Wright to immediately implement this plan, and it will be transported by storage vessels directly to unloading docks in the United States."
This news is noteworthy as it represents a significant step in Venezuela's Rodriguez cooperating with the Trump administration.
Former Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette told Fox News that the refineries in Houston and Louisiana are designed to process Venezuelan heavy crude, suggesting a positive impact on the U.S. oil industry.
Brouillette noted that 30-50 million barrels is not a particularly large amount, representing only about 2-3 days of U.S. oil consumption. Instead, he emphasized, "This is a signal that Venezuela can resume economic activity, and that fact in itself is very significant."
Before Maduro's arrest, Venezuela's oil industry had lost its former glory, despite possessing the world's largest proven reserves (estimated at over 300 billion barrels).
Decades of socialist mismanagement, expropriation of foreign assets, and U.S. sanctions have led to a sharp decline in production. Output, which exceeded 3 million barrels per day in the early 2000s, has fallen to approximately 1 million barrels per day as of 2025.
Sanctions have driven a significant portion of crude oil trading underground, and with exports increasingly directed to China, Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) has struggled to generate cash revenue. Production bottlenecks, a lack of investment, and aging infrastructure have weakened Venezuela's oil influence in the global market.
However, economists and energy experts assess that Venezuelan oil is unlikely to have an immediate or dramatic impact on the broader U.S. economy.
The analysis suggests that gradual changes will occur rather than sudden shifts.
President Trump expects that within approximately 18 months, Venezuela's oil infrastructure can be improved and daily production can be doubled.
President Trump wants U.S. oil companies to invest in Venezuela and revitalize the industry, but it is understood that U.S. companies are evaluating various issues such as security concerns and investment feasibility.
