The three individuals reportedly interviewed by President Trump as potential candidates for the next Fed Chair. From left to right: Kevin Hassett, Kevin Warsh, and Christopher Waller.
President Donald Trump has stated that he has decided on a candidate for the next Federal Reserve (Fed) chairman, but did not reveal the specific appointee in an interview with The New York Times.
"I have made a decision," President Trump said, "but I have not discussed it with anyone yet."
When asked about long-time economic advisor Kevin A. Hassett, President Trump avoided a direct answer but showed a favorable disposition.
"I don't want to say," President Trump stated, adding, "he is definitely one of the people I like."
Hassett, currently the White House's National Economic Council director, has emerged as a leading contender to succeed Jerome H. Powell as Fed chairman when his term ends in May.
A well-known figure in Republican economic circles, Hassett served as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers during Trump's first term and has maintained a close relationship with the president since.
Amidst growing speculation, Hassett has been working to position himself as a stable and experienced figure.
Hassett has emphasized the Fed's institutional structure, pointing out that monetary policy decisions are ultimately made by the 12-member Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), comprising the Board of Governors in Washington and the presidents of the regional Reserve Banks.
Hassett is not the only consideration.
Another strong candidate is Kevin M. Warsh, also known for his role on Coupang's board, a former Fed governor who came close to the top position during Trump's first term. Warsh has consistently participated in economic policy debates and is regarded by his supporters as knowledgeable about the Fed's internal operations.
The candidate pool also includes current Fed Governor Christopher J. Waller, who has built a reputation as a cautious, data-driven policymaker. Reuters reported that President Trump interviewed both Warsh and Waller late last year and has spoken positively about both since.
Whoever is ultimately chosen will lead monetary policy at a time when financial markets, inflation trends, and global growth remain under scrutiny, occupying one of the world's most influential economic posts.
With Powell's term nearing its end, a decision is expected within the coming months.
Rick Rieder, BlackRock's chief investment officer for fixed income, has not yet been interviewed by President Trump for the next Fed chair position, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Thursday the 8th. He added that he expects President Trump to decide on the Fed leadership this month.
Rieder is one of four finalists being considered to succeed Powell.
The other three finalists, Hassett, Waller, and Kevin Warsh, have all been interviewed by the president.
