President Donald Trump on May 8 (local time) did not hold back his criticism, sharing reports that Somali couriers have been moving an unusually large amount of cash through Minneapolis airports.
“Arrest them all. They are criminals!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, sharing a Just the News article about the "Somali cash drain" in Minneapolis. He asserted that this phenomenon far surpasses the scale of activity observed at other major U.S. airports.
The post was a repost of a report citing Department of Homeland Security officials who described the cash flowing through the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport in Minnesota as "highly anomalous." Officials pointed out that this pattern should have raised alarms during the Biden administration.
According to Just the News, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) detected and reported approximately $700 million in cash transported by Somali couriers in luggage out of Minneapolis over just two years, 2024 and 2025. This amounts to a staggering nearly $1 million per day on average.
Officials told the outlet that Minneapolis travelers alone carried $342.37 million in 2024 and $349.40 million in 2025, with some trips reportedly including up to $1 million per single journey.
Officials also expressed concern over the reported routes for moving cash to Dubai via Amsterdam, a travel pattern that is further increasing scrutiny from intelligence agencies and federal investigators.
One official familiar with the matter described it as "like taking U.S. dollars out of ATMs and moving it overseas," noting that the activity is being done openly through legal declarations under customs regulations.
The amount detected in Minneapolis was 10 to 100 times greater than the total overseas cash identified at major airports, with some instances being astronomically out of proportion, according to the Just the News report.
Officials told the outlet that the total in Minneapolis was "99% more than" cash detected or declared in foreign transactions at Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, and JFK airports in 2025, and also significantly exceeded the total at Seattle, another major international hub.
While the funds are reportedly declared legally, Just the News stated that these large-scale overseas cash outflows have become the subject of an extensive investigation by the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) unit, linked to a multi-billion dollar fraud probe centered on Minnesota's Somali immigrant community (a case in which dozens have previously been indicted or convicted).
Trump has repeatedly asserted that the scope of the Somali-related fraud allegations in Minnesota could be far greater than what authorities initially revealed.
Trump told reporters that if authorities identified $19 billion, "that means it could be $50 billion," describing the amount as "astronomical" and vowing that "the gravy train is over." Trump also argued that those found complicit should be deported.
The political and legal fallout is expected to expand.
White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre highlighted the administration's broad push to punish large-scale abuse of taxpayer-funded programs, stating that the administration is considering revoking citizenship for Somali-Americans convicted of fraud charges tied to major welfare scandals in Minnesota.
New questions are being raised in conservative circles about the newly revealed cash flows at Minneapolis Airport: Why wasn't this pattern detected earlier, how many taxpayer fraud cases are linked to it, and how long has Washington looked the other way while allegations of U.S. dollars being openly spirited overseas have surfaced?
