U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning (local time) once again reminded the world who is responsible for keeping the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) alive.
"No president, no person has ever done for NATO what Donald J. Trump has done," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Without me, NATO would not exist!!!"
"It would have been tossed into the dustbin of history," Trump added. "Sad, but true!!!"
Trump had long argued that allies were not sharing their fair burden of defense spending, even before he directly confronted NATO allies during his first term and repeatedly demanded that members fulfill their defense spending commitments and not rely on U.S. taxpayers.
While these demands led to increased defense spending by several NATO countries, analysts point out that the trend began after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and subsequent promises by allies to increase their military budgets.
Newsmax noted that the post came as Trump was pushing his pursuit of Greenland. The president has framed the controversial measure as a strategic necessity, citing national security, control of the Arctic, and economic benefits.
Despite European leaders' criticism of the idea, Trump remained steadfast, suggesting he is prepared to use U.S. leverage to secure better outcomes for American interests.
More recently, Trump has intensified the dispute by insisting the U.S. must secure Greenland, a move firmly rejected by Danish and Greenlandic leaders. Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
The Greenland dispute has also spilled over into NATO politics. Trump publicly shared private messages between French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, with European leaders warning the incident could damage the alliance's cohesion.
Trump also revealed on Tuesday that he had a "very good" phone call with Prime Minister Rutte about Greenland and that they agreed to hold multi-party talks on the issue during his attendance at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, this week.
"As I have made clear to everyone, Greenland is essential to national and global security. It is irreversible. Everyone will agree on this point! America is the strongest country on Earth. This is thanks to the military rebuilding that took place during my first term, and that rebuilding is proceeding at an even faster pace. We are the only superpower capable of ensuring peace throughout the world. And that, quite simply, can only be done through strength!" he said in his post on Truth Social.
