President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he is considering ways for Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado to participate in the country's politics in some capacity, though he did not specify what role she might play.
Speaking to reporters at a White House briefing, Trump referred to Machado, whom he met with last week and who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, saying, "We're talking to her, and maybe she could be involved in some way. I'd love to see that happen. Maria, maybe we can do that."
Trump's remarks represent a shift in his stance, as he had previously questioned Machado's popularity and leadership earlier this month, following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by the United States. Machado's party announced it secured 70% of the vote in the 2024 presidential election.
Trump also mentioned to reporters that the U.S. administration is cooperating with Venezuelan interim president Delsy Rodríguez, stating, "I had a very strong feeling about Venezuela, but now I've come to love Venezuela. They're working very well with us. It's very good."
