President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that a "basic framework" for negotiations on Greenland had been established, following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos, Switzerland.
"We have a framework for future agreements concerning Greenland and essentially the entire Arctic region," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. "If this deal is made, it will be immensely beneficial for the United States and all NATO member countries."
"Based on this understanding, I will not impose tariffs that were scheduled to take effect on February 1st," he added, noting that "further discussions are underway regarding the 'Golden Dome' related to Greenland."
Speaking at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday morning, Trump affirmed that he had "no intention of using force."
"I will not use force," Trump stated.
This represents a shift from his strong stance last Friday when he said, "whether they like it or not, the United States will take some action there," adding, "I want to make a deal easily, but if there is no easy way, we will have to take a difficult path."
However, Trump also indicated that the U.S. would not forget its displeasure if the Greenland negotiations do not result in an agreement.
"We want a piece of ice for the protection of the world, and they are unwilling to give it to us," he said during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday. "We have never asked for anything else. We could have kept the land, but we didn't. So the choice is theirs. If they say 'yes,' we will be very grateful. If they say 'no,' we will remember."

These remarks came before his meeting with Secretary General Rutte, during which he announced the basic agreement.
"Additional information will be provided as discussions progress," Trump concluded in his Truth Social post. "Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Ambassador Steve Witkoff, and various other individuals as needed will be in charge of the negotiations. They will report directly to me."
The United States purchased Louisiana from France for $15 million in 1803 and Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million in 1867. Additionally, during the presidency of Woodrow Wilson in 1917, the U.S. purchased the Danish West Indies for $25 million during World War I, which was later renamed the U.S. Virgin Islands.
It is possible that the United States could purchase Greenland for money, provided that the more than 56,000 residents of Greenland agree to annexation. However, a 2025 poll by the Danish newspaper Berlingske indicated that nearly 85% of residents oppose incorporation into the U.S.
Another poll by YouGov found that only 7% of Americans supported a U.S. military invasion of the region.
Reuters has also reported that the White House has discussed ways for Greenland to become an independent nation from Denmark and enter into a trusteeship agreement with the United States, similar to the Compacts of Free Association (COFA).
Three sovereign island nations in the Pacific – the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and the Republic of Palau – have entered into a trusteeship agreement with the United States, which grants them independent self-governance while the U.S. government provides international defense authority and responsibility until 2043.
