Multiple South Korean media outlets reported on the 25th (Korea time) that senior U.S. State Department officials recently visited South Korea and met with Reverend Kim Jang-hwan and Reverend Son Hyun-bo.

It is reported that Michael Needham, a senior advisor to the U.S. State Department; Julie Turner, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor; and James Heller, Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, had lunch with Reverend Son Hyun-bo on the 24th. Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary Turner also reportedly held a separate meeting with Reverend Kim Jang-hwan.

Reverend Kim, who serves as the chairman of the Far East Broadcasting Company (FEBC), previously faced a search and seizure operation. Reverend Son, the senior pastor of World Road Church in Busan, who previously led "Save Korea"—a rally against the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol—had been arrested and was released after approximately five months in detention.

In an interview with Christian Today, Reverend Son explained, "They asked about religious freedom in South Korea as well as the incidents involving myself and my church, and I took the time to answer their questions in detail."

The Chosun Ilbo reported that Reverend Son was specifically invited by the U.S. Embassy in Seoul to join the officials for lunch at the ambassador’s residence.

According to the Chosun Ilbo, Reverend Son expressed his gratitude during the lunch for Vice President Vance mentioning his situation when he met with Prime Minister Kim Min-seok at the White House last month. Needham reportedly responded by saying he sees Vice President Vance frequently and would convey their conversation to him.

Professor Son Young-kwang (College of Engineering at Ulsan University), the son of Reverend Son, was also present at the lunch. Professor Son stated, "Advisor Needham said he had heard about the background of my father's arrest many times through various pastors in Korea and the U.S., and he wanted to hear about those matters firsthand."

The Chosun Ilbo further reported that Professor Son said, "Advisor Needham also asked about my father's thoughts on the Public Official Election Act. I felt that he was well aware of the ways in which the authorities can weaponize the law."

This suggests that the issue of religious freedom in South Korea, which Vice President Vance raised concerns about during his meeting with Prime Minister Kim, could emerge as a significant point of contention between the U.S. and South Korea.

Needham previously served as chief of staff to Edwin Feulner, the founder of the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation. He also worked for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign and served as chief of staff to Secretary of State Marco Rubio when Rubio was a U.S. Senator.

Needham was appointed as a senior advisor to the State Department by President-elect Trump in early December 2024, even before Donald Trump took office. His position is at the deputy secretary level, providing direct counsel to Secretary Rubio and carrying out special missions at the Secretary's direction.

Regarding these meetings, South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, "The U.S. State Department regularly engages with various stakeholders during the process of drafting its annual human rights, human trafficking, and international religious freedom reports; this visit to Korea is part of that ongoing communication."

The Dong-A Ilbo reported, "There is analysis that the U.S. State Department's International Religious Freedom Report, typically submitted to Congress around May or June each year, could include cases from South Korea that reflect the concerns of the second Trump administration's leadership."

It is noteworthy that Vice President Vance and Secretary Rubio had previously mentioned messages sent from South Korea, where Charlie Kirk had visited shortly before his assassination.

President Trump specifically invited Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's wife, to the State of the Union address and awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor to a Korean War veteran.

There is growing potential for the evidence of religious oppression occurring in South Korea to be used as a diplomatic lever to pressure the Lee Jae-myung administration in the future.
