Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on March 31 (local time) that he has a "willingness to end this conflict" with the United States, provided that "prerequisites are met."
According to AFP and other news agencies, the office of President Pezeshkian said in a phone call with Charles Michel, President of the European Council, that "we have the necessary will to end this conflict if the prerequisites are met, especially if the recurrence of aggression is guaranteed."
These remarks come as Iran continues back-channel negotiations for a ceasefire through mediators amid rising threats of a ground offensive from the United States.
In particular, U.S. President Donald Trump, as the war exceeds one month and he faces surging oil prices stemming from the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, has been repeatedly suggesting that negotiations with Iran are progressing well and an end to the war is imminent.
The prerequisites mentioned by President Pezeshkian refer to the five conditions previously proposed to the U.S. during exchanges regarding a peace settlement.
An Iranian official had previously outlined five conditions for agreeing to a ceasefire through state media: ▲ complete cessation of aggression and assassinations by the enemy ▲ establishment of a robust mechanism to prevent the recurrence of war against Iran ▲ clear reparations for war damages ▲ complete cessation of war on all fronts and among all resistance organizations across the Middle East ▲ and the exercise of Iran's legitimate sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz and its guarantee.
Meanwhile, on the same day, shortly after President Pezeshkian's remarks became known, President Trump, at a White House event, indicated a possible withdrawal within two to three weeks, saying, "My job is to get Iran out. We're going to be out very soon."
