Secretary of Defense Pete Heges has asked Army Chief of Staff Randy George to resign immediately and retire, CBS News reported Thursday, citing sources.
One source said Heges wants someone in that position who will implement the Army's future as envisioned by President Trump and Heges.
Secretary Heges has already dismissed more than a dozen senior military officers, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff CQ Brown, Chief of Naval Operations Lisa Franchetti, Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force James Slife, and Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency Jeffrey Kruse.
A senior Defense Department official told CBS News, "We appreciate his dedicated service, but it was time for a change in Army leadership."
General George, a West Point graduate from 1988, served in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. Prior to his tenure as Army Chief of Staff, he served as the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army from 2022-2023, and before that, as the senior military assistant to then-Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin from 2021-2022.
Just The News reported that the move comes amid intense domestic and international criticism of the Trump administration over the war with Iran. President Trump stated that Operation Epic Fury was initially projected to last four to five weeks, but in a national address last night, he said it would take another two to three weeks, implying an overall operation duration of about eight weeks.
The reason for his dismissal is unclear at this time. However, CBS News reported that this dismissal is unrelated to disciplinary actions taken against Air Force pilots who flew over the home of rock musician Kid Rock in Nashville last weekend.
Just The News noted that this news comes as the war in Iran faces difficulties in achieving strategic objectives.
Public opinion polls indicate that a majority of voters want the war to end quickly, even at the expense of operational success.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 66% of respondents want the war to end quickly, even if it means a loss in operational success. Only 27% believe the U.S. should continue fighting to achieve its war aims.
Among Republicans who support Trump, 57% supported a longer intervention, but 40% supported ending the war quickly, even if it did not help the U.S. achieve its objectives.
