The niece and granddaughter of a notorious Iranian general were arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and had their green cards revoked in Los Angeles on Friday night.
Hamedeh Soleimani Afshar, 47, and her daughter Sarina Sadat Hosseini, 25, were detained by ICE on Friday while residing in Los Angeles.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Afshar had celebrated fallen US soldiers killed during the war with Iran led by President Donald Trump.
Rubio added that their eligibility for permanent residency, which allowed them to live in the US indefinitely, had been revoked and they would be deported as soon as possible.
“Until recently, Hamideh Soleimani Afshar and her daughter enjoyed a lavish life in the United States as lawful permanent residents,” he wrote on X. “Afshar is the niece of Iran Army Major General Qassem Soleimani, who died in a war Iran started under President Trump. She has openly supported the Iranian regime, praised attacks against the US, and called the United States the “Great Satan.””
“This week, I have revoked the lawful permanent resident status of Afshar and her daughter, who are now in the custody of ICE pending their removal from the United States,” Rubio added. “The Trump administration will not tolerate foreign nationals who support anti-American terror regimes using our country as a sanctuary.”
The Daily Mail reported that Afshar’s Los Angeles home is worth $740,000, and she took out a $365,000 mortgage when she bought it for $505,000 in September 2021.
The modest home has two bedrooms and two bathrooms but is stylishly decorated inside, the Daily Mail reported. Photos posted on Instagram show Afshar and her daughter enjoying a life of luxury.
Qassem Soleimani was one of Iran’s most powerful military leaders and was the commander of the Quds Force when he was killed in a US Reaper drone strike ordered by President Trump at Baghdad airport in January 2020.
A press release from the State Department accused Afshar of “promoting the Iranian regime’s propaganda activities.”
According to the press release, she “praised the new supreme leader of Iran, denounced the United States as the ‘Great Satan,’ and expressed steadfast support for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a designated terrorist organization.”
The State Department also announced that Afshar’s husband had also been banned from entering the United States.
According to Fox News, Afshar entered the US on a tourist visa in June 2015, and Hosseini entered on a student visa with her mother. In 2019, a judge granted the two women asylum, and they obtained their green cards in 2021.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also stated that Afshar had visited Iran at least four times since being granted permanent residency, including in July 2025, according to her citizenship application, which indicated her asylum claim was ‘fraudulent,’ the DHS said.
Rubio had previously revoked the lawful permanent resident status of Fatemeh Ardeshir-Larijani, the daughter of Iran’s former secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani, and her husband Seyed Kalantar Motamedi. Ardeshir-Larijani and Motamedi are not currently in the United States and are barred from future entry.
