Foreign media outlets are largely diagnosing the dramatic two-week truce agreement between the United States and Iran on the 7th (local time) as an "uneasy temporary measure that narrowly avoided catastrophe."
The New York Times (NYT), a leading US newspaper, reported the agreement on its online edition's real-time front page with the headline, "President Trump Finds an Exit After Threatening Apocalypse."
The NYT diagnosed that the agreement, reached on the 39th day of the war, "is expected to bring relief to investors and ease the escalating crisis in Asia, which relied on the Strait of Hormuz for 80% of its oil supply."
In particular, the NYT predicted, "Once the ceasefire takes effect, it will be a burden for President Trump to break it again or to allow Israel to break it."
However, the NYT pointed out, "There is also the possibility that the war will end, or at least reach an unstable truce, without President Trump achieving many of the goals he set out."
In fact, the NYT's diagnosis is that the issues identified as the fundamental reasons for the outbreak of the war on February 28th were not significantly mentioned in the announcement of this temporary ceasefire.
Iran's refusal to abandon its stockpiled nuclear fuel, its claim to enrichment rights, and the quantity and range limitations of Iran's missile arsenal, which the US and Israel demanded, were not discussed in this agreement.
Therefore, the newspaper criticized that President Trump's justification for the war had become inconsistent.
"By reaching a temporary truce with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, President Trump has effectively legitimized the new Iranian regime just five weeks after encouraging the Iranian people to overthrow it," the NYT assessed.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), a leading US newspaper leaning conservative, diagnosed that "a sustainable agreement between the United States and Iran remains precarious" despite the truce.
The WSJ stated, "Both sides still have a long way to go to reach a sustained, long-term agreement," and pointed out that "there are still significant differences in their positions on key issues such as control of the Strait of Hormuz, the future of Iran's nuclear program, and the easing of sanctions against Iran."
The UK's BBC assessed the truce as "a partial victory for President Trump, but one that will come at a high cost."
The BBC analyzed, "With the announcement of this agreement, President Trump has secured his most immediate goal, but Iran still claims 'dominance' over the Strait of Hormuz," adding, "The US and Iran are buying time to seek a permanent solution through negotiations over the next two weeks."
In particular, the BBC criticized, "Even if the two-week truce leads to lasting peace, the way the world views the United States may have fundamentally changed due to President Trump's recent remarks and the Iranian war," stating, "A country that once claimed to be the guardian of world stability is now shaking the foundations of the international order."
