U.S. Vice President JD Vance speaks with reporters. [Budapest AP=Yonhap News]
U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated on the 8th (local time) that Iran, having agreed to a two-week ceasefire and peace talks, would face "serious consequences if they break their commitment to the agreement."
Vance, who will lead the U.S. delegation in future negotiations with Iran, said this in a Q&A with reporters before departing for home after his visit to Hungary. "We are in a fundamentally good position. They are reopening the (Strait of) Hormuz, and we are in a ceasefire," he stated.
The White House announced on the same day that Vance is set to lead the U.S. negotiating team that will hold its first peace talks with the Iranian delegation in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, on the 11th.
"President (Donald Trump) is making it very clear that this deal is a ceasefire and a negotiation," Vance explained. "That's what we're offering, and what they've offered is that the strait will be reopened. If that doesn't happen, if Iran doesn't comply with the terms, then the President will not comply with our terms."
He emphasized, "Fundamentally, Iran needs to take the next step. If they don't, the President has many options to return to war."
Vance's remarks are interpreted as a threat to pressure Iran to adhere to the ceasefire agreement, following Iran's mention of potentially re-closing the Strait of Hormuz after Israel attacked Lebanon to eliminate Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, which Iran claimed was a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
Regarding Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who is reportedly leading the Iranian negotiation team, mentioning three alleged U.S. violations of the agreement on X (formerly Twitter) – the attack on Lebanon, drone intrusion into Iranian airspace, and denial of Iran's right to uranium enrichment – and claiming that the ceasefire and negotiations are "unreasonable," Vance dismissed it, saying, "It makes no sense, and I question how well he understands English."
Concerning Israel's attack on Lebanon, he stated, "Iran seems to think the ceasefire includes Lebanon, but it did not. Neither we nor Israel ever said that (Lebanon) would be part of the ceasefire agreement."
Regarding the intrusion into Iranian airspace, he commented, "Ceasefires are always messy. There is no ceasefire without some degree of turbulence." On uranium enrichment rights, he said, "We don't pay much attention to what they claim their rights are. We pay attention to what they actually do."
Vance stated, "The United States has certain requirements and desires. Iran also has things it can gain through negotiation. The more they are willing to give us, the more I think they will get out of this negotiation."
He emphasized, "We certainly don't want to see the Iranian people suffer, but we have a lot of leverage that the President of the United States can utilize. That's why I think it's very important that Iran engage in negotiations in good faith."
