Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Wednesday that the Senate plans to attempt another vote next week on a war powers resolution concerning Iran, which has already been defeated twice.
The war powers resolution would require President Donald Trump to obtain congressional approval before using military force against Iran.
The Senate attempted to pass this resolution on Monday, March 23rd, amidst escalating military tensions in the Middle East, but it was defeated 47-53.
"This is all happening because one man...has unchecked power to wage war. He's boxed himself in with dangerous and escalating rhetoric… The Senate will vote on the War Powers Resolution next week," Schumer told reporters on Wednesday, the 8th.
"Congress must reassert its authority, especially in these dangerous times," he stated. "No president, Republican or Democrat, should ever take this country to war alone. Not now, not ever."
He continued, "Republicans will have another opportunity to join Democrats and end this reckless, arbitrary war," and added, "The American people should demand that Republicans join us to pass the War Powers Act."
This resolution comes after the President faced severe criticism for threatening to obliterate Iranian civilization if Iran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday night.
The United States and Iran have since agreed to a two-week ceasefire.
