President Donald Trump reaffirmed his support for Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Friday, expressing his delight at the withdrawal of a rival candidate who had been endorsed by Tucker Carlson.
“Senator Lindsey Graham is doing a really good job, he is fighting with a lunatic by the name of Mark Lynch, who is supported by the worst Congressman in the history of the USA, Thomas Massie from Kentucky,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He added, “It’s not hard to see that Mark Lynch would be a disaster for the Republican Party and Lindsey Graham will just get the job done. Vote for Lindsey, he’s a fighter!”
Graham, seeking a fifth term this year, was competing against Paul Dans in the Republican primary. Trump suggested that Carlson's endorsement was a "kiss of death" for his campaign.
Paul Dans had challenged Graham, criticizing him as "anti-MAGA." Graham, who was previously part of the anti-Trump movement, has transformed into a staunch Trump supporter, aiding the president's legislative agenda in the Senate.
Conservative activist Paul Dans, who had pledged to prevent foreigners from owning U.S. farmland and to reinstate the Confederate flag at NASCAR events, officially abandoned his bid for the primary on Friday, April 10, submitting his resignation to the South Carolina Election Commission.
His resignation application contained no explanation. He wrote on X, "It is true that I have withdrawn from the primary today, as it was the last day to have my name removed from the ballot."
He then endorsed Mark Lynch. This move is interpreted as an attempt to unite the anti-Graham camp to mount a strong challenge.
"Paul Dans has withdrawn from the race for Senate in South Carolina against the Great Lindsey Graham," President Trump stated on Truth Social. "Things started to go wrong for Paul when the very low-IQ Tucker Carlson decided to endorse him. It was like a death wish! Lindsey is winning by a lot, and is on his way to a beautiful victory because he is a great man who gets things done!"
The South Carolina primary election is scheduled for June 9. Recent polls show Lindsey Graham significantly ahead with 41% support, compared to Mark Lynch's 21% in second place. However, since neither candidate has secured over 50%, some speculate that a runoff election on June 23 may be necessary.
