On the 15th (local time), Republican senators in the U.S. Senate blocked a recent bill seeking to limit the president's war powers concerning Iran amidst ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
The latest War Powers Resolution, introduced by Senator Tammy Duckworth (Democrat-Illinois), "directs the withdrawal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities involving Iran or any part thereof, unless, and except when, they are or have been called into military service by the declaration of war or by a specific congressional authorization therefor," reported NBC News.
The bill failed with 52 votes against and 47 votes in favor. Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, voted with Republicans to block the War Powers Resolution, while Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, voted alongside other Democratic senators.
Senator Jim Justice, a Republican from West Virginia, did not vote on the attempt.
Senator Ron Johnson (Republican-Wisconsin) urged the U.S. to complete its objectives.
"I think we have to finish the job now that we have made such difficult decisions and stirred the hornet's nest," Johnson said. "We don't want to leave a regime in place that continues to develop nuclear weapons and continues to produce missiles and drones."
The White House did not comment on whether President Trump would seek an extension, but stated that a diplomatic solution remains the goal.
"The President always prefers diplomacy, and Iran is desperate for an agreement, but first, it must abandon its desire to possess nuclear weapons and adhere to the red lines the United States has laid out," said White House spokesperson Anna Kelly.
Meanwhile, Democrats plan to continue their legislative fight in both chambers of Congress to limit President Trump's war powers.
The House of Representatives is expected to hold a vote on a separate War Powers Resolution on Thursday, according to Newsmax.
