The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a far-left organization, was pressured by its former president to make the group more biased and target conservative and religious organizations, the New York Post reported on Thursday the 23rd.

The report comes after the Department of Justice on Tuesday the 21st charged the group with fraud and money laundering in connection with "violent extremist groups."

Margaret Huang, the former president of the SPLC, took office in 2020, and since then, the SPLC has taken on a more "partisan tone," the New York Post article added.

According to the report, in an op-ed published last year, Huang claimed that "far-right extremist groups" have steadily infiltrated American society, politics, and government since President Trump's 2016 election, and analyzed that Trump's re-election would provide them with "allies in the highest offices of the country."

In an article for Daily Kos, she vehemently criticized "hard-right" groups for extending their influence into schools and libraries, stating, "What was once considered fringe opinion in modern times has now become the blueprint operated by the President and the MAGA movement," the New York Post reported.

Breitbart News reported in May 2025 that the SPLC had targeted the conservative group 'Turning Point USA' by placing it on its "Hate Group Map" alongside the KKK.

In its May 22, 2025, report titled "Turning Point USA: A Case Study in the Far-Right in 2024," the SPLC stated that TPUSA's sister 501(c)(4) organization, Turning Point Action, "spearheaded Trump's 2024 campaign in key swing states and played a critical role in electing far-right candidates in Arizona."

Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, who was brutally assassinated during a lecture in Utah in September of the same year, condemned these actions in a social media post as "cheap smears from a washed-up organization that has been deceiving scared grandmothers for decades."

Breitbart News reported on Wednesday the 22nd that the charges against the SPLC followed Kirk's long-held claims that the SPLC's designation of hate groups had targeted conservatives, Christians, parents' rights activists, and his own organization.

According to the report, in testimony before the House Judiciary Committee in December 2025, Andrew Sypher, Vice President of Turning Point USA, stated that three months before Kirk's assassination, he had warned the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) that if they designated Turning Point USA as a "hate group," the organization would become a "target."

Sypher told lawmakers that the warning proved "prophetic" after Kirk was assassinated at Utah Valley University in September 2025, Breitbart News reported.

Announcing the indictment on Tuesday, FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the charges against the SPLC include "wire fraud, false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to conceal money laundering."

They lied to donors about dismantling violent extremist groups, but in reality, they funded the leaders of those very extremist groups and even used that money to incite them to commit state and federal crimes. This is illegal activity, and an investigation is underway into all individuals involved."

The New York Post noted that Huang's 2023 compensation was $522,000. She was dismissed in July after a large-scale layoff and is currently working as a senior advisor for the Council of Leaders for Civil and Human Rights.
