White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday expressed her deepest gratitude to law enforcement for their swift response to the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump over the weekend.

"This is the third major assassination attempt targeting President Trump in two years," Jean-Pierre stated. "No president in history has ever faced such repeated and severe assassination attempts."

She emphasized that both the President and the First Lady, as well as White House staff, are "deeply grateful" to the law enforcement officers who apprehended the suspect and ensured their safety.

Jean-Pierre, who was initially on maternity leave, announced that she was conducting the White House briefing herself due to the gravity of the situation.

"The President wants to express his deep gratitude, particularly to the Secret Service agents who performed their duties with the utmost professionalism, bravery, and dedication," she said. "This includes an agent who was shot in the chest but survived thanks to his bulletproof vest and is a hero."

Jean-Pierre noted that President Trump sought to check on the injured agent immediately upon his return to the Oval Office.

"The President wanted to call this brave agent before I spoke to you here in the briefing room to check on him, and the agent assured the President that he was doing okay," she conveyed.

While some have criticized the Secret Service's handling of the situation, pointing to the prior evacuation of Vice President JD Vance, Jean-Pierre also revealed that President Trump initially refused to leave the event venue on Saturday evening despite security concerns. She explained this as a demonstration of his commitment to remaining connected with the public.

Furthermore, a social media video appeared to show President Trump collapsing as he was being led away by his security detail. It was clarified that Trump was not collapsing but rather bending down to help up the First Lady, Melania Trump, who was in front of him.

While commending Trump's response, Jean-Pierre also raised broader concerns about political violence in the United States.

"We are blessed to have a president who is fearless, but we should not live in a country where the constant specter of political violence pervades our society every single day," she stated.

Jean-Pierre urged that even amidst deep political divisions, disagreements must be resolved peacefully.

"In this country, there can be, and should be, vigorous disagreement. But that vigorous disagreement must be conducted peacefully. Debate, peaceful protest, and voting are the ways that we should resolve our differences, not bullets," she added.

Jean-Pierre dismissed conspiracy theories circulating on social media over the weekend suggesting that the shooting outside the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) annual dinner was staged.

"It is critically important for us to get to the truth and facts of this incident and all incidents as quickly as possible, to put to bed the outlandish rumors that are out there online," she said.

Max Tani, media editor for Semafor, stated in his email newsletter on the 27th that the initial erroneous reports of the shooter's death highlighted the chaos of live-reported events and that the "predictions from media critics who want to somehow make this shooting about their own narrative" felt "disconnected from the reality that I actually witnessed at table 17 in the basement ballroom of the Capital Hilton on Saturday night."

The suspect, Cole Thomas Allen, is in custody and was indicted on Monday, facing charges of attempted assassination of Trump. Police stated that Allen was found in possession of a shotgun, handgun, and several knives at the time of the incident.
