U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday (local time) that Iran has shown signs of being "on the verge of collapse."
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Iranian officials had requested assistance, particularly urging the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical international maritime transport route.
He said, "Iran just informed us that they are ‘on the verge of collapse,’ and that they would like us to ‘open up the Strait of Hormuz’ as soon as possible, until they resolve their leadership problems."
"I believe they will be able to solve their problems!" he added.
The remarks come as Iran's oil exports have sharply declined due to U.S. sanctions, placing significant strain on its economy, following Iran's failure to appear for a second round of peace talks in Pakistan.
The United States has not blockaded the Strait of Hormuz. In the strait, Iran's Revolutionary Guard maintains a hardline stance, engaging in piracy by threatening, imposing tolls on, or hijacking vessels passing through.
The U.S. military has established a blockade line in the Gulf of Oman, intercepting vessels heading for Iran's coast, and is conducting extensive global crackdowns on ships departing from or heading to Iran.
The Iranian regime is reportedly still resisting U.S. demands for a complete abandonment of its nuclear program.
Meanwhile, divisions within the Iranian leadership, coupled with deteriorating economic conditions, particularly soaring inflation and a sharp decline in economic growth rates, are making negotiations even more challenging.
Iran is attempting to leverage its control over the Strait of Hormuz as a bargaining chip against the United States in its pursuit of nuclear ambitions, but members of President Trump's national security team have expressed skepticism about Tehran's intentions.
